12.20 Take the Bad with the Good and Rolling with the Punches

It's been 2 months since we've been up to the hideaway and when we got here this weekend, we walked into a flooded hallway and bathroom. A pipe burst under the bathroom sink.
Well, as bad as it was, the good thing is it had to have burst very recently because we only lost 2000 gallons. Since Jimmy kind of works/volunteers for the water company up here, he was able to find that out quickly. A leak like that would waste 1000 gallons a day. Imagine if it had burst 60 days ago!
This weekend definitely has not been our best weekends up here. There's lot of water damage. But Jimmy's aldread replaced the broken pipe, he got to play with the wet vac he got for his birthday last year, and, um...the floors needed to be replaced anyway...this is just sooner than we had planned for.
But it's snowing, so the weekend had it's peaceful moments, too.

In memory of a Volvo Wagon

We had to put the old girl down last Thursday. Actually, not sure if it had the personality of a girl or boy. Probably a boy since it was Jimmy's car. But the event was a relatively sad day. Not really sad sad (thus the relatively), because it was just metal and plastic and rubber and...ok, i'll stop there...but it happened during a week that was already blech, that saying goodbye to the hunk-o-junk was just another little notch in the way the week had been going.

And by hunk-o-junk, i mean it in the most affectionate way. lots of memories in that car. After 14 years and 223,334 miles, it took us to a lot of places. Humor me if you will as I stroll...or should i say cruise...down memory lane. Grab a soda and prepare yourself for a long one. Or just skip it if you want. I promise, I won't hold it against you.

1995
To say that Jimmy researched the heck out of which car to buy would be a gross understatement. He spent at least 6-8 months determining which car would be best for his needs. When he was deciding on the Volvo wagon, I flat out refused. I hated wagons. Wagons were ugly. But I tried to be reasonable, talked to my friends and cousin about it. I knew it wouldn't be my car, but I would have to ride in it, and I didn't want to be seen in a stupid family car wagon. We were barely 27 years old, not 35 with 2 kids. My friends reasoned with me, told me it was Jimmy's car and wagons weren't that bad. Besides, it's a Volvo so it'll last a long time, long enough for us to have that family with 2 kids and a dog. Joke was on us on that last part! haha.

So in October of '95, I relented and we bit the bullet and bought the wagon.
There's Jimmy inspecting and falling more in love with every inch of the car. That red Grand Prix next to it? The reason Jimmy needed a new car, the lemon with faulty breaks, that left him/us stranded 4 times in as many years, once in Portland while on vacation.

That evening, we had to show it to our dear friends, the Bowens. Ed worked with Jimmy so heard for the past 6-8 months which car Jimmy was researching and which one he finally decided on. And I'm pretty sure Angie helped me through the trauma of owning a...gasp...wagon. That night, we picked up another good friend Jimmy worked with, Jeff, and drove through San Francisco to Marin. Against my better judgment, but Jimmy thought it fine, we drove through McDonald's and ate burgers, fries and soda IN the brand spanking new not even 7 hours old car. Now, we love Jeff, but he had a tendency to...spill, and not even notice. I could tell you about the time he lived with us in Southern California and spilled sprite on our carpet and since it was clear, he didn't think it needed to be cleaned up because it would dry like water. It never occurred to him that the sugar in the soda would be sticky and be a magnet for dirt. This is our Jeff, one of our best and closest friends, who we love and let eat in our brand new car. Love you Jeff!

1996
This was the Volvo's 2nd trip to Tahoe in its first 5 months. The first time Jimmy took it to Tahoe, I stayed home. It was a boys trip. On their way home, the roads were super icy and I'm sure you figured the rest of this story, the car ended up in the ditch next to the mountain. It was less than 3 months old and acquired its first noticeable dents. This trip in March of '96, I tagged along with the boys. No accidents.

We put a lot of miles on that car in 1996. In May, we drove to Frisco, Colorado to spend a long weekend with Jeff at his family's condo in the Rockies. It was an unforgettable trip. We took the Volvo all the way up to the Continental Divide at an elevation of nearly 12,000 feet.

A few weeks after that, we took drove cross country to Jimmy's brother's home in New Jersey. We drove from California, though Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and finally arrived 5 days later in New Jersey.
Most nights, we camped on the road at KOAs to save money. We were in West Liberty, Iowa here.

On our way back to California, we decided to drive though Canada, mostly on the Trans-Canada Highway. From New Jersey, we drove through New York, into Ontario spending a few days in Toronto. Onward to Winnepeg, Manatoba. Then to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; Edmonton, Alberta; the Canadian Rockies from Jasper to Banff; ending in Calgary, Alberta before driving through British Columbia back into the US via Washington, through Oregon and back home to the Bay Area, after 6 weeks on the road.

Obviously we spent a lot of time in the car that year. This trip certainly was the most memorable because it was so long and we explored areas we had never gone before. Along the way, we were stopped twice for speeding. Once in New Jersey, an hour before arriving at Jimmy's brothers house. The next time in the Manatoba plains. Both times, our California license plates got us out of tickets. All through Canada, we got many thumbs up. Once, just outside of Edmonton, a car with 2 young men, younger than us at the time, pulled up next to us and told us to roll down our window. We did and they said "California, eh? Cool!!! Don't go into BC. BC sucks!" Very funny and memorable.

In April of 2000, the volvo saw it's first serious accident. We were in San Francisco on a spur of the moment trip in. We were driving down Van Ness when a car made an illegal left turn into us. There was a sign facing him that said "NO LEFT TURN." But he was a tourist from Thailand and couldn't read the sign. It happened so fast that we were already pushed across the street onto the sidewalk when Jimmy said "this is gonna hurt". He thought he said it BEFORE the car even hit us. He thought he said it when he saw the car coming at us. But it didn't come out of his mouth till we were stopped on the side of the road. It took 3 months and over $14k to repair the car. Thank goodness for insurance, especially since the tourist was driving a rental and they didn't cover jack, even though it was his fault. Thank goodness for witnesses, too. It took us a while to do spontaneous trips into the city after that. I was ok, but Jimmy had a concussion and linger effects from the accident for over a year.

But we've made lots of memories in that car.
Many trips to S. California and Las Vegas to visit family.Trips back through the Mojave Desert where we met in high school and fell in love.

Countless trips exploring the Sierra Nevadas near our hideaway...

The subject of a few silly creative photos:
In Carmel.

May 2008 would be its last big Road Trip.We drove 13 hours to Sedona, Arizona. Spent a few days exploring the most beautiful desert I've ever been in. Drove another 13 or 14 hours to Southern California to visit friends and go to our niece's college graduation. Then drove the 6 hours back home to the Bay Area. It was only a week, nothing like our 6 week adventure 12 years prior, but another memorable time on the road in the wagon.

That summer however, it started showing signs of its age. We had to repair the radiator and put in a new transmission. It was also time to replace the tires. But before putting all that money into a car that old, Jimmy did a lot more research into a replacement car. He needs a car that can haul a lot of stuff. The boy plays hockey 2-3 times a week and has to fit his goalie gear in the back. He needs a car that can tow. He wants a car that gets decent mileage. He needs a car that fits his long legs and is comfortable and fun to drive for several hours at a time. He concluded that for his needs and for the value, it would be better to repair rather than replace. I couldn't argue with him, because even after those first 2 years of complaining about how ugly the car was, it won me over and I loved it, too.

Before the year was over, we'd have to put a little more money into the car. We were in Orange County, spending some time w/ Jimmy's brother and family. You know how "they" say never leave your GPS on your dash? Yup, we became a statistic. Thankfully, all they stole was the GPS, more valuables were in the car. But it was a classic "smash and grab" theft, the boys barely stopped their car to grab the GPS. Another car down the street was also broken into and the neighbor next door heard and saw the boys do it. Didn't report it or tell us when it happened during the night, but did when the police came to file a report.

But after replacing the window, the wagon didn't give us a bit of trouble. The window incident happened last september, so we still had another year of fun with it.
With the new transmission, it easily towed the boat up and down the steep mountainside.

And when we got the Rhino, it wasn't phased by having to tow it up the mountain to elevations over 8000 feet.

In fact, it seemed to have renewed spunk and energy.

Until one day last week, when it accidentally met the back end of a Nissan Altima.
The damage may not look too bad. Thankfully, both Jimmy and the other party barely felt the bump. But on a car this old, the needed repair of the radiator and hood alone, totals the car.

So we had to say good-bye and thank you to a car that took us many places, was a lot of fun to drive, and gave us lots of memories.

Despite all my hemming and hawing, I'm so glad Jimmy bought that car. There couldn't have been a more perfect car for him...us...for the past 14 years.

My planets are out of whack

I'm usually not one to air out my grievances usually because when one thing bad happens a good happens and it all balances out. And it's not that things really went wrong, but things didn't quite go right. It really felt like I was just a step behind or a step too far forward and not on track. Is something going on with the cosmos that I'm not aware of? Perhaps I should read my horoscope. Anyhoo...let the venting commence:

Part 1.
I had my weekly hand therapy appointment at 1pm. Arrive on time, 5 mins early in fact, check in, all seems good. Till 10 mins go by, the receptionist tells me "Margaret doesn't have you for an appointment today. In fact, she's out of the office."
I say "Oh really? Is today Wednesday?" Because granted, I get confused on my days and it very well could have been Tuesday and oops, my bad.
He says "Yes. Lemme look you up...your last name is West, right?"
Me: "No. Retzlaff. R-e-t-z-l-a-f-f"
Him: "W-e-s-t..."
Me: "R.e.t.z..."
Him" "R-e-s-t..."
Me even slower "R.E.T.Z.L.A.F.F"
I'll spare you...took him 3 more tries.

He says: "Looks like you canceled your appointment."
I say: "Uh no. I definitely did not cancel my appointment."
He says "Yes. You rescheduled with Susan for this morning at 10:30."
Me: "No...I would have been here at 10:30 then."
He calls another receptionist to help.
She says " Looks like Margaret canceled your appointment and switched it to 10:30 this morning with Susan. Didn't she call you?"
Me: "nnnnoo."
Blah Blah Blah more back and forth. She apologizes profusely, can't explain why Margaret didn't call. Asks if I can come back at 2:30 to see susan.
Yes. So i have lunch. Go back and see Susan. I've decided to see Susan from now on instead of Margaret.

Part 2.
While I was at lunch, I was seated and for more than 10 minutes, no one helped me. I saw a waitress chitterchattering about Hawaii w/ some customers at a nearby table. Not sure she was mine, but I did try to make eye contact just so I could let anyone know that I was ready to place my order. I finally get the eye of random waiter and he helps me. Lunch was fine, not really a big deal, but I was on a schedule, had to get back for my hand therapy. And really, I think chatting w/ your customers is great, but don't do it at the expense of your other customers. But I have a question for ya'll...what is your suggestion on tipping? I gave her a 12% tip, I know how hard it is to work in the food service and times are tough. I was tossing between leaving nothing, to 8%-10%. The 12% just ended up being a round number. I had hoped the bill would be under the other waiter's tab, but it was under hers.

Part 3.
On my way home, decided I really really needed a haircut. I go to my salon, the one where I've been going for over 10 years, seeing the same stylist. I knew it was a long shot to get a walk-in appointment. So I was not disappointed when I couldn't get my hair cut. But it turns out that my stylist will be out for a few months "to have baby." I'm so excited for her, I know she's been trying.
But for 10 years, no one else has cut my hair. I don't even know where to look for another stylist till she comes back. I decided to drive around till I found another salon that had time for a walk-in. 2 hours later, I finally find myself back at home, no haircut. Everywhere I went and called, no availabilities. Oh well. But the good thing is I think I found a nice salon less than a mile from my house that will do till Lynn comes back. I'll make an appointment for next week, after we get back from Chicago.

Part 4.
The trash people didn't pick up our trash today.

BUT the good that came about:
-Hand therapy felt better than it ever has. I had no idea my thumb was suppose to have the range of motion is has now. Plus they did the paraffin wax thingy on both hands...awesomeness. And I got a new splint that hopefully will work better.
-lucky to be able to eat good food.
-stylist having a baby.
-found good salon that's near home. Till Lynn comes back. I'm pretty loyal to her.
-weather in the high 60s low 70s.
-planning for tomorrow's trip.

We all need days like these to remind us how blessed we are when everything seems to go so smoothly. But I'd appreciate it if my planets would realign before I get on that plane tomorrow afternoon. Thank you.

struggling to figure it all out

so, this has been how i've felt the last couple of weeks.

In July I got a new macbook and we (Jimmy) finally transfered all of my PC stuff onto it about 2 weeks ago so I've been fully Mac'd since then.
The transition hasn't been as easy as I had hoped.
Things aren't as intuitive as I had hoped.
Viewing and editing my photos hasn't been as easy as I had hoped.
Therefore, blogging hasn't been as easy as I had hoped.
Part of my frustration is that supposedly, mac is much easier to use and more intuitive. Like my MIL, she got a mac for Christmas last year and seriously? within minutes she was like, this is freakin' awesome and was all click-click-click ba-da-bing ba-da-boom. Me? I'm like bog-bog-bog what the??
Jimmy's been kind to my ego by saying that since I was such a skilled user on the PC, my adjustment period will be longer because of my old habits. And now I have to learn. What? Learn, are you kidding me?

What I have been having fun with is a program called Photobooth that uses the camera in the computer and that's how i took that silly self-portrait. Which is about a week old - yesterday I chopped of my hair and got it colored (for the first time in 11 years). The jury's still out on if it's a good thing or not.
On a brighter note, I leave you with a pretty hydrangea from my MIL's garden.

Impending doom

If you notice white or green fuzziness on something you've already eaten 1/2 of, chances are, you've eaten mold and can expect a stomach ache soon.

Brilliant.

Motel AMC

I tried to go to a movie today. I went to see "In The Land Of Women" and from what I could hear, it was good. There were 3 of us in the theater. The couple sat in the very back and chatted thru the previews. A lot of people talk thru the previews, so I didn't mind. There's only been one other time when I was annoyed by chatters during a movie because most of the time, people are considerate. They also came to watch a movie, so they're paying attention.

Most of the time.

Not today.

When the movie started, they chatted a little, but were also making out occasionally, so I'd get breaks where they weren't talking. Then her phone rang. She carried on a 15 minute conversation, obviously upset because her voice kept getting louder and louder. Finally, she hung up, but now she had to tell her boyfriend all about it.

Thru all of this, I'm thinking, "You guys just paid $8.25 each to Not Watch A Movie. What the...heck."

After a little bit, they were "quiet" again, till she got another phone call. This one didn't last as long, because she was anxious to get back to what she was doing. And then, the making out...went to that place where you really don't wanna hear.

Then I realized that $16.50 is a lot cheaper than a motel.

Yikes.

My tv won't turn on.
I.don't.know.what.I'm.going.to.do.
My IT guy is gone till 11:30 Sunday night, and that tv is so complicated, i can't diagnose what's wrong with it.
And believe it or not, we're a one tv household. No crawling into bed and watching re-runs in there.
And did TiVo record Grey's Anatomy last night?

This is really gonna screw up my weekend plans of doing absolutely nothing except watch dvd's.

Well, hopefully Jimmy can talk me thru fixing it. And I'm not gonna be home till midnight tonight so really, it's only 2 days that I might have to go with tv. Two.Long.Days.

Pathetic, isn't it?

Question to all my blogspot buddies

Those of you who don't use Picasa, how long does it take you to upload photos to your post?

Picasa limits me to 4 photos per post. Annoying. But when I go thru blogger, it takes soooo freaking long to upload just one photo. When I try to upload more than one the wait is excruciating and I always end up canceling the process and just go back to Picasa. Am I doing something wrong?

Also, those on the new blogger...is there a way to know the percentage of 'done' the publishing is at like in old blogger? Or am I just not seeing it? It just says "Publishing is in process" with the exclamation warning sign thingy up.

what's that smell?

I set a few eggs on the stove to come to a boil. In the meantime, I went into the office to read a few blogs.
...35 minutes later...I hear a crackling popping noise from the kitchen.
Uh oh.
All the water had boiled off and the pan is sizzling. With half a dozen dry eggs in it.

The house reaks of overcooked eggs. and burnt pan.

ugh.

Turning on Word Verification

I've been blogging for a year and a half and I haven't had the need to turn on Word Verification, until now. I've received over a dozen blogger comment spams in the past week. More than I've had in the whole 16 months that I've been blogging.

So I'm turning on Word Verification.

Bah.

Outlet Malls

I went to the Gilroy Outlet Center the other day to return something I bought online from Eddie Bauer. Figuring it was an outlet store, I assumed the prices would be cheap and the sales would be rampant. Wrong. Maybe most things were a max of $10-$12 off regular price of last season's clothes. There were a couple of racks in the back that had 40% off, but nothing in my style or size. All I want is one simple summer skirt...you'd think that summer stuff would be marked 60-70% off...nope. In fact, there were hardly any summer clothes at all, 98% of the clothes in there were fall.
Last night, Phin and I went to Valley Fair and I found a skirt in the sales rack at Nordstrom, $21. That same skirt would have been $39.99 at the outlet center. That seems to be their magic number. Plus, if I decide against keeping it, Nordstrom is only 4 miles away, whereas the Outlet center is 30ish miles away.
Truthfully, I'm pretty annoyed at shopping. It's more of a chore rather than an event or fun thing to do. Remember in high school and college, or right after you had your first real job out of college and shopping was the best thing to do with all of your free time and money? Not anymore.

Bold squirrel in my MIL's yard.

Another Hot Day

Oh how I wish we were at the lake.

Today's temps in San Jose peaked at 108, muggy and partially cloudy. The air was thick. Blech. We were watching the Weather Channel this evening and saw that 75% of homes in the nation have air conditioners. I was surprised because I'm sure that less than 40% of the homes in the Bay Area have AC. Because of this, people are seeking refuge outside of their homes. We went to the movies today and the line was long. The people behind us said "Is this the end of the line for air conditioning?" People joked about how they didn't care what they movie they saw, just let 'em in the theatre. Unfortunately for one viewer though, it was too late. Jimmy and I took our seats and the poor woman in front of us was having a heat stroke. I'm not exaggerating. She was young and fit, in her 20's. But she was delirious, foaming at the mouth, eyes rolled back and sweating uncontrollably. The paramedics came, gave her oxygen and took her out. It was very sad and scary. I hope she's ok now.

We saw "The Lady in the Water". It was very good and totally not what I expected. I'll end with that lest I give anything away. Posted by Picasa
