Memorial Day

I hope everyone has been enjoying the long holiday weekend, the unofficial start of SUMMER! Hurray for summer! Our summer promises to be a busy one. Plans already include a graduation in San Diego, a wedding in Alaska, a week with nieces and nephews at the hideaway, a possible trip to Banff National Park in Canada, which would include a side trip to Calgary for some hockey equipment for the husband. It's in Calgary where we first discovered Boston Pizza, one of our favorite pizza joints in North America. I'll definitely splurge on Boston Pizza if we happen to go to Alberta this summer. Oh, and Tim Hortons, too. hmmm...this post has taken a turn towards food...I'm obviously hungry. Ok, moving on.

I know for most of us, the long weekend is a celebration with family and friends including BBQ's, beer and lots of outdoor activities. And it should be! But I'd also like to take a moment and give a little nod to our family and friends who have served in the military. My dad served for just a few months during WWII. But he was a proud Filipino American and enlisted when our country needed him. Peace out.

I had forgotten about how old your dad was when you were born, Mad, so this is a very special tribute to him. Thanks for remembering!

Now, if we could just stop all these wars!!!

It looks like you have a lot on your plate (Ha! you said you were hungry!) for this summer coming up. One thing at a time...and with pics. We'll want to hear about it all!

what a wonderful summer you have planned already. Are you driving or flying. I have heard that Banff is beautiful.
Question for anyone that has an answer. I have friends that do not blog, they say they can't send a comment, do you have to blog in order to leave comments? i have checked and i have it set to public.
Thanks for any ideas

I like the ghetto classic ending to your touching story. :)

Those papers are cool. I didn't know you had such a thing.

So wonderful to know that your dad had that kind of patriotism. Thanks for reminding us that it's more than a day off from work.

And WOW, do you have quite a summer planned.

Hooray for your dad and other brave men like him! Sounds like you're going to have a terrific summer ahead. Take lots of photos, especially in Alaska! xo

I think my summer is shaping up to be quite busy too, but with no Tim Hortons. I haven't been there since probably 1991.

Thank you for your nice tribute. I have one of my father's Purple Hearts tucked away somewhere.

What a great summer you are getting ready for.

And I'm glad you reminded us of what Memorial day is all about. My Dad and my Hub are both veterans. My Dad served during WWII and my Hub served during the Vietnam War.

The one thing I'll never forget about Hub's service is a visit to a military hospital where I met so many soldiers who had lost so very much. It's imprinted on my memory forever.
